I just bought a plan with Hostgator.com and have found that Backlinks are essentially a must have for any ’serious’ site. How would I go about obtaining some backlinks? (Such as linkmaster.com, but I don’t want to pay)

I know there are hundreds of factors on SEO but I’m specifically looking at what is the most important factor assuming I have already built a webpage that is optimized for search indexing. I heard that backlinks particularly on very high relevance sites will boost my webpage to go up the search results but wonder if this is true.

Here is the case. i got some backlinks pointing to my own site and the webpages got indexed by google. The index number is increasing everyday. I wonder if these backlinks play some role in it. If so, how could i build direct connection between the backlinks and the indexed pages? It’s urgent. Thanks.

I tried this for a while searching for sites, forums, blogs that I could post backlinks, and it’s harder then it seems. Why don’t you get more credit for what you do? It seems like you would have to have a high tolerance of patience. Trying to find places that match your keywords and trying to post a link there. Is there a repository or list of sites that you know are open to add links? Half the time you register for a site and realize there are NOFOLLOW or HTML has been turned off or they require 10 or more posts before allowing a link. This job is not for the faint of heart. When you first started what were you averaging a day or hour?
